The Sleepy Eye Medical Center is an independent hospital and clinic owned and operated
by the City of Sleepy Eye. The medical center is governed by a 7 member Board of Directors, appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. The SEMC Hospital is a licensed Critical Access Hospital with 18 available in-patient beds. The SEMC Clinic is a Medicare certified Rural Health Clinic with 15 exam rooms. The Sleepy Eye Medical Center also operates a clinic in Morgan Minnesota. SEMC has approximately 100 employees (full and part time). Our annual payroll of 3.8 million dollars generates an economic benefit to our community of approximately 19 million dollars . The SEMC medical staff consists of four physicians, three family practice physicians, one general surgeon and a Family Nurse Practitioner. In addition eight specialty physicians see patients in our clinic and/or perform surgical procedures at SEMC: an Ophthalmologist, an Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon, a Urologist, two Podiatrists, one Orthopedic Surgeon, and an Internist with a specialty in Cardiology. 57% of patients are Medicare; 5% are Medicaid; 2% are self-pay; and the remaining 36% are commercial insurance. On an average day there are about 3-5 in-patients in the hospital. Within a 24-hour period the number of patients can be nearly 15 or as low as 1 or 2. All of these days have to be staffed. The average length of stay for all patients is less than 3 days. In addition to patients in the hospital, through its many out-patient and clinic patients, the medical center comes into direct contact with over 1,000 customers per month; 12,000 per year. The SEMC Lab does over 50,000 diagnostic tests each year. There are over 10,000 Clinic visits at SEMC each year. There are over 1,200 Emergency Room visits each year. In addition to major projects such as the 2004 addition of the new clinic, lab and radiology departments, and the new rehab department built in the addition’s lower level in 2007, $100,000 to $200,000 of new medical equipment or other facility improvements are added to the medical center each year. |
SEMC HISTORY |
The original 28-bed Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital got its start in March of 1941
when the City Council passed a resolution for a $75,000 bond issue for its construction.
The hospital opened in 1942. An addition to the hospital was built in
1961, and in 1991 the ambulance entrance was renovated and the first floor was
redecorated. On January 1, 2002, the hospital purchased the Sleepy Eye Medical Clinic from the physicians and the Sleepy Eye Medical Center was created. In 2004 an addition to the hospital was built which houses a new clinic, laboratory, radiology department, business office, and health information management department. A new physical therapy and cardiac rehab department was built in the lower level of the addition in 2007. |
